PRESS RELEASE

Fair Trading Commission Poster Competition Winners

On March 15th, 2011 Barbados and the world celebrated Consumer Rights Day, a day set aside to focus on consumer rights and responsibilities. At the Fair Trading Commission, consumer awareness is the focus every day and primary school students across Barbados were recently given an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of their rights and responsibilities in the Commission’s Poster Competition. The aim of the competition was to heighten young consumers’ awareness, while harnessing their creativity.

On Tuesday, March, 22nd, 2011, the students, all between the ages of nine and 12, were rewarded for their efforts. The People’s Cathedral Primary School gained the top three positions with the winning entry by Christon Fitt who received a Nintendo DS Lite and a game as first prize. The second prize winner was Kayla Croney, who received a digital camera, and the third prize of an Apple iPod Classic was awarded to Omari Roach. Fourth place winner Lesonge Corbin-Kirton of St. James Primary, and fifth place winner Suriel St. Hill of Westbury Primary both received MP3 Players. A token of appreciation was also given to all students who participated but did not gain a place in the top five positions. A monetary donation was also given to the winning school.

Entrants were required to submit a poster depicting their idea of “How the Fair Trading Commission Protects Consumers”. Each poster was judged on originality, relevance to the topic, innovation and aesthetics. Judges for the competition were Ms. Janice Whittle, Curator of the Queen’s Park Gallery and Mr. Michael Piggott, Manager of Design at the Barbados Industrial Development Corporation, as well as members of staff at the Commission.
