FAIR TRADING COMMISSION CLARIFICATION OF STATEMENT ON CHICKEN PRICE INCREASES

The Fair Trading Commission (‘Commission’) refers to the article titled ‘Businesses Say Hikes Must Come’, featured on page 3 of the August 18, 2021 edition of the Daily Nation.

The Commission wishes to highlight that it has not made any recommendation to markup the price of poultry. Competition law and policy suggest that the market, through competitive forces, should influence conditions including the price of goods and services. The Commission’s role is to ensure a level competitive playing field as well as ensure that competitive forces do not restrict competition.

Competition law and policy does not support conduct that may be construed as collusive. In this regard, the statement attributed to the interviewees regarding a planned collective approach to address the issue of the increase in poultry prices, is concerning.

The public is invited to contact the Commission with any queries at 424-0260 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
