PUBLIC NOTICE

BLPC’s GRID CODE INTERCONNECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS APPROVED

On November 11, 2024, the Fair Trading Commission (“the Commission”) and the Chief Electrical Officer approved the Barbados Light & Power Company Limited’s (BLPC’s) Interconnection Requirements for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at Voltages 24.9 kV and below (“the Code”) pursuant to Section 31 (1) of the Electric Light and Power (Amendment) ACT, 2019-38 of the Laws of Barbados.

Approval of the Code was conditional on the BLPC providing relevant single line diagrams (SLDs) to guide stakeholders in the sector.

On December 2, 2024, the BLPC provided the SLDs as required. These were reviewed and the BLPC resubmitted the approved Code, appended with the amended SLDs on January 29, 2025. Having reexamined the amended SLDs, the Commission and Chief Electrical Officer are satisfied that the aforementioned conditions have been met and full approval of the Code was granted on February 5, 2025.

It is expected that this code will be updated as the energy landscape transitions to higher penetrations of renewable energy and the actualisation of energy storage assets become more widespread.

The complete amended Interconnection Requirements for BESS can be accessed here.
