If I buy an item that is second-hand and then it is faulty, do I still have any rights of redress?

Yes, you do. Second-hand goods must be in a reasonable condition for their age and price. While second hand goods may have faults, it is the obligation of the supplier to point them out at the time of sale. If other faults become apparent after you buy an item, you have the right to redress.
