CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
 
The Fair Trading Commission ("the Commission") is seeking to recruit individuals to fill the following positions:-
 
1.     Legal Officer (Temporary)
 
The successful candidate will be part of the legal team of the Commission and will report to the General Legal Counsel.
 
Responsibilities include:-
  • Providing legal and regulatory advice and guidance to the Commission and staff in energy matters, including renewable energy;
  • Assisting in the research and drafting of Commission decisions and orders on the determination of applications submitted by the regulated electric  utility and others in the energy sector; and
  • Preparing legal opinions on issues of law and regulation in the energy sector.
 
The successful candidate should:-
  • Be an Attorney-at-Law of not less than three years' standing; and
  • Have strong communication, and interpersonal skills.
 
Experience gained in a regulatory or compliance environment is an asset.
 
 
2.   Senior Legal Officer
 
The successful candidate will be required to lead on all legal matters that are before the Commission in the absence of the General Legal Counsel.
 
Responsibilities include:-
  • Supervision of the work of the Legal Department in the absence of the General Legal Counsel;
  • Providing legal advice to the Commission and all its departments on the Fair Trading Commission Act, Fair Competition Act, Consumer Protection Act, Utilities Regulation Act and any other legislation administered by the Commission; and
  • Representing the Commission in court and before tribunals and government agencies.
 
The successful candidate should:-
  • Be an Attorney-at-Law of not less than five years' standing,  and have experience in litigation;
  • Be familiar with regulatory policies and procedures and have knowledge of administrative law;
  • Possess a proven track record for high quality output; and
  • Have strong communication, and interpersonal skills.
 
Previous experience gained through association with an enforcement or regulatory agency, together with a good working knowledge of utility regulation, consumer protection and fair competition laws is an asset.
 
 
3.   Consumer Protection Officer
 
The Consumer Protection Officer will report to the Director of Consumer Protection and will be responsible for undertaking day-to-day activities that are essential to ensuring that the interests of consumers are protected.
 
Responsibilities Include:-
  • Investigating and resolving consumer complaints and/queries;
  • Preparing Staff Analyses and reports;
  • Conducting Market Studies;
  • Reviewing contracts for fairness;
  • Conducting research on new and developing consumer protection trends and issues;
  • Delivering presentations to businesses and consumers; and
  • Assisting in advancing the Commission's consumer protection initiatives.
 
The successful candidate should:-
  • Hold a Master's degree in a business discipline, the social sciences,  or law and a minimum of two years' relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a business discipline, the social sciences, or law and have a minimum of five years' relevant experience;
  • Have knowledge of consumer protection laws; and
  • Have strong research, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
 
Previous experience in a customer service environment is an asset.
