The Fair Trading Commission is a tripartite body that is responsible for safeguarding the interests of consumers by enforcing the Utilities Regulation Act, Fair Competition Act and the Consumer Protection Act.
 
The Consumer Protection Division is the arm of the organisation that is responsible for addressing consumer protection matters.
 
Consumer Protection Officer
 
The Consumer Protection Officer reports to the Director of the Consumer Protection and will be responsible for undertaking the day-to-day activities that are essential to ensuring that the interests of consumers are protected. This includes investigating unfair trading practices and unfair contract terms, conducting market studies, making proposals for legislative reforms that improve consumer welfare and representing the Commission at local, regional and international fora.
 
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the following core competencies:
  • Excellent research and report writing skills;
  • Ability to represent the Commission at national, regional and international levels;
  • Aptitude for championing consumer causes; identify issues that impact consumers, and encouraging businesses to consider consumers when making policies and executing their organisational plans;
  • Supporting consumer welfare;
  • Ability to tailor international best practice to the Barbadian context;
  • Building partnerships and relationships with stakeholders;
  • Be passionate and customer friendly.
