The Fair Trading Commission is seeking to recruit an individual to fill the position of General Legal Counsel.
The General Legal Counsel will be responsible for advising the Commission on the administration and enforcement of legislation administered by the Commission and on general legal matters.
This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
Responsibilities include:
  • Administration and enforcement of legislation pertaining to utility regulation, fair competition and consumer protection;
  • Advising the Commission panels and committees on the determination of utility regulation, fair competition and consumer protection and other legal matters;
  • Evaluating and analysing developments within the sectors in order to inform on any revisions of regulatory practices,
  • Providing advice regarding review and amendment of legislation enforced by the Commission.
  • Ensuring the accurate interpretation of the Fair Trading Commission Act, and all other legislation to be enforced by the Commission.
  • Ensuring that decisions, reports or other documentation issued by the Commission are legally sound.
Required Qualifications:-
  • Be an Attorney-at-Law of not less than seven (7) years’ standing with experience in litigation and hold a Master of Laws (LLM) qualification from a recognised institution; or
  • Have ten (10) years’ experience in commercial law, at least seven (7) of which must have been in a senior position.
Other Requirements:-
  • Be familiar with regulatory policies and procedures and have knowledge of administrative law;
  • Have proven advocacy skills;
  • Have the ability to prepare clear, sound and informative reports;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and a track record for high quality output;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;

Previous experience in litigation or through association with an enforcement or regulatory agency, together with a good working knowledge of utility regulation, consumer protection and/or fair competition laws would be an asset.
