PUBLIC NOTICE

BLPC’s GRID CODE INTERCONNECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS APPROVED

The Fair Trading Commission (the Commission) and the Chief Electrical Officer have approved the Barbados Light & Power Company Limited’s (BLPC’s) Interconnection Requirements for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at Voltages 24.9 kV and below. This document was formerly referred to as the “Barbados Light & Power Company Limited’s Grid Code Battery Storage Requirements” .

This approved, amended Code, supplements the BLPC’s existing Grid Code 2017 and contains at minimum, appropriate technical and design connection specifications for BESS connecting and utilising the BLPC’s network to provide grid and other services. BESS therefore, are required to comply with this code.

On September 4, 2024, the Commission issued a Notice for Consultation on the Grid Code for BESS to the public. This process concluded on September 25, 2024. Responses to the Consultation document were reviewed, summarised and discussed with the BLPC and the BLPC’s responses and the amended Code were also shared with the Chief Electrical Officer for further review.

The amended Code was approved in conjunction with the Chief Electrical Officer with the proviso that the BLPC provide the appropriate single line diagrams to guide select market participants whose systems, do not require major engineering input.

The Grid Code Interconnection Requirements for BESS is expected to be updated as the energy storage market in Barbados evolves.
